What is Data Traceability?

Data Traceability is about showing the full path that data follows, from where it is first created to where it is eventually consumed.

This means showing the source of data, its journey through a company's IT systems and the final places that it is used in. Depending on the level of detail needed, Data Traceability (also called business lineage) can be fairly simple, or more complex. To accommodate different user perspectives, Data Traceability should be able to be filtered, so that it reduces noise and only presents the information needed.
